Off the pavement
Gravel racing takes cycling off the pavement and onto mixed terrain — dirt roads, packed gravel, farm tracks, and the occasional stretch of asphalt. Race day is usually a mass start on a rural course, and the bunch shatters over the first climbs and rough sections.
Events range from short entry-level routes to 100+ mile epics, and aid stations sit farther apart than on the road, so riders are largely self-supported between them. Elite fields can be fast, but many riders are there for the challenge and the finish — the gravel scene is known for being welcoming to first-timers.
Best starting point. Many events offer a short or “fun ride” route — the friendliest way to experience the terrain and community.
A solid day on dirt, where pacing, fueling, and self-sufficiency start to matter.
The classic gravel epic — flagship events stretch past 100 miles, some to 200 and beyond.
