RACE THE HOURGLASS
Welcome to the amazing Hourglass Challenge! Bring your friends—or come ready to make some. The Toughest Alive crew is bringing an absurdly fun, social endurance challenge to Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood.

The distance stays the same. The clock gets shorter. Run, walk, ruck, carry, or take on Hybrid—then meet back at the starting line to catch your breath, cheer each other on, and go again.

You don’t have to be the fastest. Just come find out how many rounds you’ve got.

*Photos shown are from other Toughest Alive events and represent the atmosphere and experience you can expect.*

Kids Race Too!
We want the whole family to have a place on this starting line.

Kids can compete in their own youth divisions in Run, Ruck, Hybrid, and Walk. The format is the same: the same loops, the same horn, the same shrinking rounds, and the same chance to see what happens when they keep showing up.

The only difference is the required weight in the youth Ruck divisions:

- Adult men: 30 lb
- Adult women: 20 lb
- Youth ages 12–17: 15 lb, not to exceed 15% of bodyweight
- Youth under age 12: 8 lb or 15% of bodyweight, whichever is less.

Ruck requirements are dry weight and do not include the pack, water, food, or other consumable supplies. Rucks may be weighed before, during, or after the event.

Choosing Run, Hybrid, or Walk? No added weight is required.

Every athlete under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the required waiver. That parent or guardian must remain onsite and reachable throughout the event. Youth athletes may complete their loops independently.

Choose Your Hourglass:
RUN — Complete a 2-mile loop each round.

HYBRID — Complete a 2-mile loop, then perform 10 judged burpees in the marked Hybrid zone at the start/finish. Your round is complete when the judge counts your 10th valid burpee before the horn.

RUCK — Complete a 1-mile loop each round wearing a backpack or weight vest with the required weight.

CARRY -- Haul the prescribed weight 0.5 miles carrying it; either hand, both hands, zercher/front carry, left shoulder then right shoulder: anyway except wearing it. Bring a kettlebell, bring a sandbag, bring a pail of sand, it doesn't matter. Bring what you want to haul: 50 lbs for men; 35 lbs for women.

WALK — For those in the earlier stages of their fitness journey, join us and walk! Complete a 1-mile loop each round.

Several ways to take it on. The same shrinking clock. The same opportunity to make one more.

Beat the Hourglass Clock
Round 1 gives you 30 minutes. Round 2 gives you 29. Round 3 gives you 28. Round 4 gives you 27. Every new round is one minute shorter than the round before it.

Finish your loop before the horn and whatever time remains belongs to you.

Catch your breath. Eat something. Drink something. Sit down. Make questionable calculations about future rounds. Then get back on the line.

You cannot start the next round early. Everyone waits together at the start/finish line until the horn sounds. That horn ends the current round and starts the next one. Leave before it sounds and the round does not count.

That shared reset is one of the reasons people love the Hourglass: it is almost impossible to do this event without accidentally making new friends. In a normal 10K, the race starts, everybody spreads out, and you may never see the same people again. Here, every round brings you back to the same start/finish line with the same fun, tired, determined people. You catch your breath together, compare questionable strategies, encourage one another, and then head out again when the horn sounds.

Miss the cutoff and your Hourglass is complete. No shame. No minimum. Your finish is the distance you earned before the clock caught you.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect a welcoming home base, aid-station support, music, community, a repeatable course, plenty of encouragement, and one increasingly rude clock.

Bring your normal fuel, hydration, clothing, and endurance gear. Every round returns you to the same start/finish area, so your supplies and your people are never far away.

Friends and family are encouraged to come watch. Bring a chair, cheer people through the horn, and make some noise. You may arrive planning to spectate and leave wondering why you didn't register.

HOW DIVISIONS ARE WON
Run, Walk, Ruck, and Hybrid each crown its own last athlete standing. Youth athletes compete within their own published youth divisions—not against adults.

If every remaining athlete in a division misses the same horn, the athlete who travels farthest during that round wins.

MAKE IT YOUR RACE
Maybe your goal is 10 miles. Maybe it is your first half marathon. Maybe you want 20, 30, or more. Maybe you came to be the last athlete standing. Maybe you honestly have no idea.

Perfect.

Take the first round. Then earn the next one.

The strategy changes as the day goes on. Move too hard early and you may pay for it later. Leave yourself too little margin and the horn may end your day. You will have to decide when to push, when to eat, and how much rest you can afford.

Eventually, endurance becomes a conversation with the clock. Truthfully, the strategy changes every round!

GENEROUS ENCOURAGEMENT
Toughest Alive is built on the simple truth that the toughest thing is to show up every day.

And we believe that strong competition and GENEROUS ENCOURAGEMENT belong on the same starting line.

Cheer for the leader.

Cheer for the athlete chasing a personal record.

Cheer even louder for the person coming around the corner with seconds left.

The field gets smaller.

The cheering section gets bigger.

There is one thing I can absolutely guarantee: Brooke, Dossie, Sophia and I will be cheering for you, playing your "hype song" and talking you into going further -- and so will everyone else at this really fun event.

SHOW UP
There is no perfect pace. There is no magic number of rounds. There is only the next one.

The distance stays the same. The clock gets shorter. You keep showing up until the clock finally catches you. And [spoiler alert] the clock will win the Hourglass. No human ever will.

But everyone leaves laughing, with new friends, having gotten "picked off" by the clock at some point.
