Obstacle Course Racing

Sports guide in progress

We haven't finished this guide yet. It's on our list — but here is some basic info to get you started in the meantime.

Getting Started with Obstacle Course Racing

Obstacle course races (OCR) combine running over outdoor terrain with a series of physical obstacles — walls, rope climbs, monkey bars, carries, and crawls. Major series include Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, and Savage Race, each with their own signature obstacle set.

Race day involves wave starts on courses that range from a 5K-style sprint with 20ish obstacles to longer formats ranging from 10K to marathon distance and beyond, depending on the series. Most events offer both competitive and open heats, with some also offering age group or team divisions.

OCR rewards a mix of running fitness, grip strength, and full-body conditioning. The barrier to entry is lower than it looks — most events are designed so beginners can finish in an open wave with help on the obstacles when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is obstacle course racing?
Obstacle course racing (OCR) is an event format that combines running over outdoor terrain with physical obstacles such as walls, rope climbs, monkey bars, carries, and crawls. Distances and obstacle counts vary by event series.
What are the main OCR event series?
Spartan Race (Sprint, Super, Beast, and Ultra distances) and Tough Mudders (5K, 10K, and longer formats) are two very popular OCR events. Each series has its own signature obstacles and rule set.
Do I have to complete every obstacle?
It depends on the race organizer and the heat. In competitive heats, failing an obstacle typically adds a penalty such as burpees, a penalty loop, or added time. In open and team heats at most events, you can skip an obstacle or get help from other racers without penalty.
What gear do I need for OCR?
Trail or OCR-specific running shoes with aggressive tread and athletic clothing that dries quickly. Gloves are optional — some racers prefer them, but many skip them because they can get slippery when wet.
