Celebrate National Public Lands Day with us at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge!
Join the Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge for the Run for the Refuge, a family-friendly event that combines fitness, fun, wildlife, and conservation. Whether you're a seasoned runner, casual walker, or simply looking for a fun way to spend time outdoors, there's something for everyone.
Participants can choose from our featured 5k Run/Walk, or the Otter Trot Fun Run, inspired by one of the refuge's most beloved wildlife residents. River otters are energetic, curious, and always on the move—making them the perfect mascot for a day dedicated to getting outside and exploring public lands.
National Public Lands Day is the nation's largest single-day volunteer and stewardship event, celebrating the parks, refuges, forests, and public spaces that connect us to nature. By participating in Run for the Refuge, you're helping support the conservation and public access mission of Ohio's only National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
About the Friends
The Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge supports the conservation mission of Ohio's only National Wildlife Refuge Complex by acquiring land, engaging the community, enhancing public access, and connecting people with nature.
Why It Matters
The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Complex protects more than 11,000 acres of wetlands, grasslands, forests, and coastal habitat along the southern shore of Lake Erie. These habitats provide critical nesting and migration stopover areas for birds, spawning habitat for fish, and homes for countless species of wildlife.
The refuge also protects one of our region's most valuable resources: fresh water. The Great Lakes contain approximately 20% of the world's surface fresh water, and the wetlands of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge help filter pollutants, reduce flooding, improve water quality, and support a healthy Lake Erie ecosystem.
By participating in Run for the Refuge, you're helping ensure these lands remain protected and accessible for future generations.
Your Impact
100% of your registration fee supports the Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and helps fund conservation projects, visitor experiences, educational programs, volunteer initiatives, internships, habitat restoration, and public access improvements throughout the refuge.
