The American Legion, 21st District "Be the One" 5K Run/Walk is a 501(c3) non-profit event intended the bring advocacy and awareness to the number one issue facing veterans today-"SUICIDE." Alabama records over 120 veteran suicides annually, accounting for roughly 18% of all suicide deaths in the state, while veterans make up only about 9.1% of the population. Factors such as age, gender, homelessness, and mental health play a significant role to help bring awareness to this persistent issue that plagues our communities. Jefferson County has implemented a specialized veteran mental health initiative due to elevated risk levels in this area.
