From the Organizer
This year marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed our nation and our community. As we approach this solemn milestone, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring that we Never Forget the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and the courage displayed in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
Our local officers are staging this fundraising event in memory of the 37 Middletown residents who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The Middletown PBA Local 124 is also proud to establish a memorial scholarship in honor of retired Deputy Chief Joseph Capriotti.
Deputy Chief Capriotti began his career with the Middletown Township Police Department on July 15, 1982, and served honorably until his retirement on August 1, 2010. Throughout his distinguished career, one of his most memorable contributions was the critical role he played in the Middletown Police Department’s response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Joe responded to Ground Zero in the days and weeks following the attacks and personally notified every Middletown family who had lost a loved one that day—an act of compassion and duty that was of the utmost importance to him.
As a result of his response to Ground Zero, Joseph contracted cancer, which he ultimately succumbed to in June 2019. It is with great pride and honor that the Middletown PBA creates a scholarship fund in his name to carry on his legacy of service and sacrifice.
As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we invite our entire community to come together to honor these remarkable citizens, especially Deputy Chief Joseph Capriotti, and to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit through movement and giving.
This year, we hope to have the largest showing of first responders in years. We invite police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, dispatchers, corrections officers, and all those who serve to join us and run in formation as a visible tribute to those we lost and those who answered the call. Together, we can demonstrate the unity, brotherhood, and commitment to service that continue to define the first responder community.
The race will be held at the Middletown Train Station, 22 Church Street, Middletown, NJ. The 5K course will be USATF-certified and managed by the Shore Athletic Club. The route begins at the train station and travels 1.55 miles out and back along Middletown-Lincroft Road, with the turnaround point at Thompson Middle School. A course map will be available soon.
Official chip timing and live results
Two water stations (one at the turnaround and one at the finish)
Overall awards and age-group awards in five-year increments
Awards ceremony following the kids’ run
Join us as we honor the memories of those we lost, support future generations through the Deputy Chief Joseph Capriotti Memorial Scholarship, and reaffirm our promise that we will never forget.
