2026 Alpha Phi Thankful 5k Race is a running race on November 6–8, 2026 in Charlottesville, VA, with an entry fee of $22.
From the Organizer
The Thankful 5k is a race dedicated to bringing together the Zeta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi, family members, and the greater UVA and Charlottesville community in honor of Shelley Goldsmith and Casey Schulman, two inspiring members of Alpha Phi at UVA. All funds raised for the 5k are donated to foundations and scholarships in their names aimed at providing support for students seeking or enrolled in higher education. The Shelley Goldsmith Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Jefferson Scholars Foundation candidate from Southwest Virginia who made it to the final selection round. The Casey Schulman Foundation was started as a non-profit with the mission of awarding a college scholarship to Justice High School students who would carry on Casey's spirit. This year's race will not only include the return of the in-person 5k on grounds, but will continue last year's weekend-long virtual component, allowing supporting members to participate nation wide.
The Thankful 5k derived its name from Casey's hand painted "thankful" sign that she kept above her bed. Thankful was the way Casey lived her life.
After Casey passed away in 2012, her sisters in Alpha Phi took the initiative to create a new philanthropic event, the Thankful 5K. For 10 years, this race has continued to spread Casey's uncanny ability to inspire kindness and gratitude.
