About This Sport

From Endurance Grid's founder, Phil

This perspective is here to help you understand the sport, decide if it's the right fit, and know how to prepare. For course distances, logistics, and race-day specifics, always defer to the race organizer's event page.

Three sports, one race. Swim, bike, run — in that order, back to back, with two transitions in between that become their own kind of skill. The sprint distance is the shortest official format in triathlon, and the best place to start. It's far more accessible than most people think.

If you already swim, bike, or run with any regularity, you're likely more prepared than you realize. Race day asks you to motivate yourself for most of the course — the swim start is chaotic and exciting, the bike is quiet and self-driven, and the run brings people back with spectators and a finish line. That self-reliance is exactly what keeps people coming back to this sport.

If you're not a comfortable swimmer, pool time before race day will go a long way. Be able to complete the swim distance comfortably before you do it in a race environment.

How long to train: 8–16 weeks depending on your current fitness level.
