Open water swimming events reward consistent pool work and the ability to navigate without a lane line — which is a different skill than it sounds. If you're comfortable in a pool, the transition to open water is manageable with some specific preparation.

Sighting — lifting your head to spot a buoy without losing your stroke rhythm — is the technique most newcomers underestimate. Practice it in training. A wetsuit can provide significant buoyancy in colder water, and most open water events in the Midwest will specify whether it's permitted or required.

What you need: Pool access for base fitness, open water practice before race day, and a wetsuit appropriate for the water temperature.
