About This Sport

From Endurance Grid's founder, Phil

This perspective is here to help you understand the sport, decide if it's the right fit, and know how to prepare. For course distances, logistics, and race-day specifics, always defer to the race organizer's event page.

Open water swimming events reward consistent pool work and the ability to navigate without a lane line — which is a different skill than it sounds. If you're comfortable in a pool, the transition to open water is manageable with some specific preparation.

Sighting — lifting your head to spot a buoy without losing your stroke rhythm — is the technique most newcomers underestimate. Practice it in training. A wetsuit can provide significant buoyancy in colder water, and most open water events in the Midwest will specify whether it's permitted or required.

What you need: Pool access for base fitness, open water practice before race day, and a wetsuit appropriate for the water temperature.
