From the Organizer
This year’s 5K recipient, Brandon “Chomp” Barela, is a fun-loving and incredibly strong 9-year-old who needs our help.
Brandon was born with a heart condition and had his first heart surgery before he was even 4 months old. From day one, his parents stepped into parenthood facing challenges most families never have to imagine — navigating so many unknowns with incredible strength, faith, and love.
Although we knew the day would come that this valve would need to be replaced, it was originally scheduled for May 2026. Brandon got COVID in February 2026, which completely damaged his heart valve and changed everything. He spent a full month at Primary Children’s Hospital in active heart failure, as his family stood by his side through every high and low, waiting and praying for his heart to grow stronger.
Last month, Brandon underwent a major surgery to replace the valve in his heart. While the surgery was successful, the journey is far from over. Brandon now faces weekly blood draws to closely monitor his medications, along with several daily medications to help strengthen his heart as he continues to recover. His family is also facing overwhelming medical expenses after months of hospital stays, treatments, and ongoing care.
And if you know Brandon, you know he’s full of life. He has the biggest personality, keeps everyone laughing, and truly brings so much joy to the people around him. There’s never a dull moment with “Chomp” — and he is deeply loved by so many.
We are beyond grateful for the support that has already surrounded Brandon and his family. This event is a chance for all of us to come together, show up for him, and remind them they are not walking this road alone.
