Join us in honoring our heroes this Memorial Day for the Flag Relay across Mobile, AL. “Remember 2 Remember!” – Inspiring Americans on Memorial Day to remember our military service members & their loved ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
📍 Monday, May 25, 2026
🕕 Starter’s Ceremony: 6:45am-7:00am
📌 Start Location: 9055 Tanner Williams Rd (West Mobile, next to Pierce Creek Cemetery)
🚩 Volunteers Needed! Flag Carriers (for legs of 1-mile running/jogging @ 10-12 minute pace)
Volunteers run/jog in at least a pair of 2, carrying 2 flags (a United States flag & a "We Support Our Troops" flag/both 3 x 5 in size) on a light-weight aluminum pole for a 1 mile leg (or more as preferred), passing the flags to the next pair of participants at a designated point -- until the entire segment's distance is covered. Legs can have more than 2 runners/joggers and participants can share opportunities in carrying the flags when moving in groups larger than 2. The “average” pace is usually about 1 mile per 10-12 minutes. Some legs are faster and some slower depending on participants' pace.
A personally owned “safety vehicle” follows directly behind the runners/joggers at a safe distance to provide a buffer between other vehicles traveling along the route. The safety vehicle also carries the MDFR Volunteer Segment Coordinator, who provides periodic updates for the flags’ progress along the route via texting and/or Facebook updates. In addition to the safety vehicle, local police or sheriff escorts assist in providing additional traffic safety measures, while moving along these routes.
Volunteers sign up to participate via the RunSignup website and can find more information via the MDFR Mobile, AL Facebook page, via email: endellee@yahoo.com, or by calling the cell phone listed: 251.649.1430. Participants are notified of the location of their designated leg of the flag relay via website registration, and reconfirmation will occur via email and/or text, by the MDFR Segment Coordinator no later than 2 to 3 days prior to the event.
