SoWeBo Gateway 5K

Honoring Legacy. Expanding Opportunity. Running Toward the Future.

In Southwest Baltimore, tradition is not just remembered—it’s lived, celebrated, and carried forward one step at a time.

Since its founding in 2011, the SoWeBo Landmark 5K has grown from a grassroots neighborhood initiative into one of Southwest Baltimore’s most enduring community events. What began as a simple idea—to bring neighbors together through movement—has evolved into a powerful symbol of unity, wellness, and neighborhood pride .

Each year, the race transforms the streets of SoWeBo into more than a course—it becomes a journey. Beginning in Union Square Park, participants move through historic landmarks such as Hollins Market, the B&O Railroad Museum, Carroll Park, and the H.L. Mencken House—experiencing firsthand the culture, architecture, and stories that define the community .

But what has sustained this race for nearly 15 years is not just its route—it’s its people.

The SoWeBo Landmark 5K has consistently brought together families, youth, longtime residents, and new neighbors alike. It has welcomed runners, walkers, and parents with strollers, creating an inclusive environment where participation matters just as much as performance. In 2024, more than 220 participants took part, with youth representing over one-third of all runners—demonstrating the race’s growing impact on the next generation .

That momentum continued in 2025, with 236 registered runners, reinforcing the race’s consistency and upward trajectory as a trusted neighborhood tradition.

Behind the scenes, more than 100 volunteers annually contribute their time and energy—powering every mile marker, water station, and finish line moment. This level of community ownership has built something rare: a race that belongs to the neighborhood.

And as the event has grown, so has its purpose.

Proceeds from the race directly support youth sports, wellness programming, and community-based initiatives led by the Southwest Sports and Fitness Alliance (SSFA). What happens on race day fuels opportunity year-round—providing safe spaces, structured programming, and pathways for young people to grow, lead, and thrive .

A Milestone Moment: 15 Years of SoWeBo, 10 Years of SBGP

As the race approaches its 15th year, it enters a defining new chapter.

In collaboration with the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP)—celebrating 10 years of transformative investment in South Baltimore and the Middle Branch corridor—this evolution represents a strategic and symbolic alignment of legacy and forward progress.

This is not simply a new race.
It is a merger of purpose, place, and possibility.

The introduction of a new course—expanding into South Baltimore and the Middle Branch—invites participants to experience the city in a new way. Runners will move through areas shaped by intentional redevelopment and investment, showcasing the evolving landscape of Baltimore while remaining rooted in the cultural richness of SoWeBo.

For longtime participants, this is a reward for loyalty—a fresh experience that offers both a welcomed challenge and a deeper connection to the city’s transformation.

For new participants, it is an invitation to discovery—to engage with both the historic foundation of Southwest Baltimore and the emerging opportunities being built through SBGP’s work.

Honoring Legacy While Expanding Reach

At the heart of this collaboration is a clear commitment:

To honor the 14-year legacy that built the SoWeBo Landmark 5K—while expanding its reach, relevance, and impact.

The SoWeBo name carries weight. It represents trust, credibility, and a deep-rooted connection to the community. That identity is not being replaced—it is being elevated through partnership.

The Southwest Sports and Fitness Alliance (SSFA) remains a steward of that legacy—continuing to lead with authenticity, community engagement, and a commitment to youth development, whether in a supporting or central role.

Together with SBGP, this next phase positions the race as more than a neighborhood event. It becomes a citywide platform for connection, access, and opportunity.

Why This Matters for Sponsors

The SoWeBo Gateway 5K offers a unique opportunity to align with:

  • A 15-year proven community event with deep neighborhood trust
  • A growing participant base with strong youth engagement
  • A collaborative initiative bridging historic communities and emerging development
  • A mission-driven platform supporting youth, wellness, and equitable access

This is not just visibility—it is meaningful association with impact.

Sponsors are not simply supporting a race.
They are investing in:

  • Healthier communities
  • Stronger neighborhoods
  • And expanded opportunities for the next generation

The Vision Forward

This is not just the next race.
This is the moment where tradition meets transformation.

Where a neighborhood institution expands its footprint—And a gateway opens for the entire city to move forward together.

SoWeBo Gateway 5K is more than a run. It is a reflection of where Baltimore has been—And a bold step toward where it’s going.
