About This Sport

From Endurance Grid's founder, Phil

This perspective is here to help you understand the sport, decide if it's the right fit, and know how to prepare. For course distances, logistics, and race-day specifics, always defer to the race organizer's event page.

Gravel racing sits between road cycling and mountain biking — long distances on unpaved and mixed-surface terrain, with an emphasis on self-sufficiency and adventure over pure speed. The gravel community has a reputation for being welcoming to newcomers, and most events have a wide range of finisher times.

Tire selection matters more in gravel than in road cycling. Wider tires with some tread give you stability on loose surfaces without slowing you down significantly on pavement. Most gravel events allow a range of bike types, so don't let gear be the barrier to entry.

What you need: A gravel or cyclocross bike (or a road bike with wider tire clearance), a helmet, and training that includes time on unpaved surfaces.

Phil Tarnowski is a NASM-certified personal trainer and the founder of Endurance Grid. He's created training plans and completed half marathons, sprint triathlons, and HYROX. Learn more about Endurance Grid's purpose to help endurance athletes everywhere here →
