About This Sport
This perspective is here to help you understand the sport, decide if it's the right fit, and know how to prepare. For course distances, logistics, and race-day specifics, always defer to the race organizer's event page.
A duathlon is run-bike-run: two running segments with a cycling leg in the middle. It's the triathlon format for people who want the multi-sport experience without the open water swim. The transitions are their own discipline — a smooth T1 and T2 can make a measurable difference in your finish time.
The run-to-bike transition is harder than it looks. Running on tired legs immediately after cycling, or biking hard after a fast first run, takes specific preparation. Brick workouts — running immediately after cycling — are the single most useful training session for this sport.
How long to train: 8–12 weeks. Focus on brick sessions and pacing judgment across the three legs.
